The Complete Idiot's Guide to Electrical Repair by Terry Meany, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Electrical Repair is a basic instruction manual on home wiring and repair. The book covers AC/DC, volts, watts, fuses, and circuit breakers, national and local codes, and caution signs and safety concerns. Learn when it's best to do-it-yourself and when you need to bring in the pros. Also covered are extension cords and multiple strips, switches and receptacles, installing fixtures and adding new circuits, and working around existing wiring.
RV Electrical Systems: A Basic Guide to Troubleshooting, Repair, and Improvement by Bill Moeller, X For RVers who remain mystified by their RV's electrical systems--120-volt alternating current (AC) and 12-volt direct current (DC)--this book is a godsend. It provides a better understanding of what electricity is and what it does. This problem-solving reference answers questions such as: "Why do interior lights dim or burn out rapidly?" and, "Why won't the batteries recharge after a night without electricity?" It tells you how to repair and improve electrical systems; how to troubleshoot faulty brakes, taillights, and "house" circuits; how to detect dangerous shorts, faulty grounds, inadequate connections, malfunctioning switches, dead battery cells, or current leakage; and much more. This book could save your vacation, or even your life. All you need to know about RV electricity, including: How to safely use a campground hookup. How to increase battery charging efficiency. How to take the pulse of your AC and DC electrical systems. How to recognize and correct dangerous wiring practices. How to troubleshoot electrical problems of all types. How to upgrade your RV from fuses to circuit breakers. How to calculate your electrical needs and upgrade your system to meet them. How to select the most effective components--batteries, alternator, regulator, coverter, charger, generator, solar panels. How to recognize phantom electrical loads that can drain your batteries.
Intelligent electronic device - An Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) is a term used in the electric power industry to describe microprocessor-based controllers of power system equipment, such as circuit breakers, transformers, and capacitor banks. These IEDs receive data from sensors and power equipment, and can issue control commands, such as tripping circuit breakers if they sense voltage, current, or frequency anomalies, or raise/lower voltage levels in order to maintain the desired level. Residual-current device - In electrical installations, residual current devices (RCD) "Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter"; along with residual current circuit breakers (RCCB) operate to disconnect a circuit whenever they detect that the flow of current is not balanced between the phase conductor and the neutral conductor which is commonly connected to earth. These devices can be tested to see if they are operational and/or they have been wired correctly. Transient Recovery Voltage - A transient recovery voltage (or TRV) for high-voltage circuit breakers is the voltage that appears across the terminals after current interruption. It is a critical parameter for fault interruption by a high-voltage circuit breaker, its characteristics (amplitude, rate of rise) can lead either to a successful current interruption or to a failure (called reignition or restrike). Voltage spike - Voltage spikes are fast, short duration surges (overvoltages) in the electric potential in a given circuit. These are typically caused by lightning strikes, although power outages, tripped circuit breakers, short circuits, and power transitions in other large equipment on the same power line, and malfunctions caused by the power company can also cause them.
